Издание знакомит читателей с уникальным памятником, блюдом из Коллекции Аль-Тани, созданным непосредственно перед возникновением ислама или в первые века его господства на Ближнем Востоке. Этот экспонат богато украшен многочисленными изображениями в технике инкрустации серебром, медью и железом. В декоре блюда используются мотивы, навеянные обильной флорой и фауной долины Нила, восходящие к эпохе Античности. Развитие эллинистических мотивов в провинциях Византийской империи не прервалось с возникновением Арабского халифата в VII веке и послужило основой для формирования мусульманской культуры. Сложные явления в развитии искусства на Ближнем Востоке накануне возникновения ислама и в первые столетия после арабского завоевания также иллюстрируются благодаря представленным памятникам из эрмитажного собрания.
Книга предназначена для специалистов и широкого круга читателей, интересующихся культурой и искусством средневекового Ближнего Востока.

The purpose of this exhibition is to present a unique work of art, a dish from The Al Thani Collection, that has particular significance for those with an interest in the medieval East. Although it only recently came to scholarly attention, the dish is remarkable in its combination of elements of pre-Islamic Egyptian art and the geometrical approach to decoration that characterised art during the early centuries of Islam.
Through this unique object we can illustrate the complex processes taking place in the Eastern Mediterranean in the period immediately before the Arab conquest of the Near East and over the next few centuries. Not only was there no break in the development of Hellenistic motifs in provinces of the Byzantine Empire (fifth to seventh centuries) when the Arab Caliphate emerged in the seventh century, but it served as the basis for Islamic art of the Umayyad Caliphate (661-750), which had its capital in Damascus.
A group of Coptic objects created in Egypt in the fourth to ninth centuries makes up the first section of the exhibition. They incorporate Antique motifs reworked in the spirit of local traditions, with numerous ‘Nile’ scenes (depictions of the greater river, its flora and fauna).
Central place is occupied by the bronze dish from The Al Thani Collection, on which we see a great variety of Hellenistic Nile motifs. The treatment and combination of scenes that rarely appear on a single object would seem to indicate that they were being reworked in the Islamic period. Antique subjects had lost their original meaning and become part of an overall benevolent message. Displayed separately, the dish forms the second and most important part of the exhibition.
In the third section we see Hermitage bronze items, examples of early Islamic art that are well known in the scholarly literature. Two main categories of metalwork survive from this time: trays and ewers. They were often decorated with ornament and scenes that were Antique in origin, but which were rethought and reworked, with a gradual development towards a geometrical arrangement of the decoration, the surface divided into bands and tiers.
